Maisie and Ruth was created as a place to share creativity, encouragement, and the simple joy of making things by hand. I published my very first free pattern on the blog five years ago, never imagining how much it would grow or how many wonderful makers it would connect.

WHY IT’S CALLED MAISIE AND RUTH

The name Maisie and Ruth holds a very special place in my heart. This space is named after my two beloved Grandmothers, Maisie and Ruth, who were the very first people to teach me how to knit, crochet, and sew in Edinburgh, Scotland. They passed down not just practical skills, but a deep appreciation for handmade items, patience, and creativity.

Every stitch, pattern, and design shared here is inspired by the love, care, and tradition they instilled in me, and this blog is my way of honouring their legacy.

Here you’ll find patterns, tutorials and tips. My passion is to help others feel confident in their creativity. Whether you’re picking up a hook for the first time, looking for inspiration for your next project, or simply enjoy being part of a kind and supportive creative space, you’re in exactly the right place.

THE VIDEOS THAT STARTED IT ALL

Very early on, my YouTube tutorials for the Barclay Baby Blanket, Teddy Bear Blanket, and Fast Baby Booties unexpectedly went viral. Those videos reached makers all over the world and truly launched everything for me, turning what began as a small creative outlet into something much bigger.

The response was overwhelming in the best possible way, and it showed me just how powerful and supportive the handmade crochet community could be.
