How Many Squares You’ll Need

The Cozy Petals Blanket is wonderfully simple to customize, and each size uses only a small number of squares. The XL size is made with just 30 flower granny squares, the Large Throw uses 20 squares, and the Lapghan comes together with only 12 squares.

This makes the project feel manageable and satisfying, no matter which size you choose—each square brings you one step closer to a gorgeous, cozy finished blanket.

Yarn Used

I used Lion Brand Hue + Me, a chunky-weight yarn. Made from a wool-blend of 80% acrylic and 20% wool, this yarn is exceptionally easy to work with and comes in a gorgeous range of modern shades.

This yarn was designed by Alex Tavel of Two of Wands and the colours have been beautifully curated. This makes mixing and matching shades effortless — perfect for floral designs like this one. It also has great stitch definition, so the raised petals really stand out, and it glides smoothly on the hook (especially with my Clover 9mm!).

Colour Inspiration

The colours I chose for this flower crochet blanket were inspired by the soft, nostalgic warmth of autumn — those earthy, comforting shades that make everything feel a little cozier.

For all the blanket sizes, the flowers are made with a Mustard (golden yellow) centre and the petals are worked with Salt (eggshell white). The background colours are a mix of:

  • Macchiato
  • Rosewater
  • Artichoke
  • Saffron

Yarn Substitutes

If you can’t find Lion Brand Hue + Me, don’t worry — this pattern works beautifully with a variety of weight 5 (bulky / chunky / 12 ply) yarn. You can easily substitute with options like:

Premier Yarns Anti-Pilling Bamboo Chunky

Brava Bulky

Hayfield Bonus Chunky

Paintbox Yarns Wool Blend Chunky.

Substituting with a good quality chunky yarn will give you the same cozy, textured look that makes the Cozy Petals Blanket so special. Just be sure to check your tension and adjust your hook size if needed.

Hook Size

I used a 9mm Clover hook, which I highly recommend for chunky yarn. The smooth surface of this particular hook helps the yarn glide and prevents snagging — issues that you can sometimes encounter when working with a bulky yarn.

When joining your squares with the slip stitch seam, keep your tension looser or size up to an N/P (10mm) hook.

Yarn Amounts & Finished Sizes

Yarn Substitutes

Flower Square Yardage

  • If you would like to adjust the number of flower granny squares and / or add more squares to the blanket, each individual square uses the following amount of yarn:
  • Centre of flower — 2.25g / 2.4 yds
  • Petals — 16.77g / 18.1 yds

Gauge / Tension

Test your gauge (tension) with a sample flower square before you begin.

With a Size M/N (9mm) crochet hook, each blocked flower square measures 10 x 10 in / 25 x 25 cm.

With 9mm hook and Colour A (all squares):

Make a magic ring or ch6 and sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.

Round 1. Ch2 (counts as your first st), 9dc into ring, sl st to top of beg ch2 to join, [10 sts].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Attach Colour B to any st with a sl st (all squares).

Round 2. Ch2 (counts as your first st), 1dc in same st, (2dc in next st) 9 times, sl st to top of beg ch2 to join, [20 sts].

Round 3. Sl st in next st, (ch2, 1tr) in same st, 3tr in next st, (1tr, 1dc) in next st, sl st in next st (1st petal complete), *1dc, 1tr) in next st, 3tr in next st, (1tr, 1dc) in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat from * to * around, end with a sl st at base of beg ch2 to join. [40 sts, 5 petals).

Round 4. *Ch6 (fairly tightly), sk first petal and sl st in next sl st right before next petal*, repeat from * to * around, sl st to 1st sl st to join, [5x ch6 sps].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Before starting round 5, make sure that the ch6 sps are at the back of your work. With right side facing up, attach next colour with a sl st to any ch6 sp at the back of your work.

Round 5. Ch2 (counts as your first st), 7dc in same sp, *8dc in next ch6 sp*, repeat from * to * around, sl st to top of beg ch2 to join, [40 sts].

Round 6. Ch3, (counts as your first st), 1EXdc in same st, 1dc in next 9 sts,

*(2EXdc, ch2, 2EXdc) in next st (corner made), 1dc in next 9 sts*, repeat from * to * 3 times, end with (2EXdc, ch2) at base of beg ch3, work a single crochet to top of beg ch3 to join, [13 sts on each side of square].

Round 7. Ch3, (counts as your first st), 1EXdc in ch2 sp, 1dc in next 13 sts,

*(2EXdc, ch2, 2EXdc) in next ch2-sp, 1dc in next 13 sts*, repeat from * to * 3 times, end with (2EXdc, ch2) in last ch2 corner sp , sl st to top of beg ch3 to join, or make an invisible join (easier when seaming later), [17 sts on each side of square].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking Squares

Once you’ve finished crocheting the flower squares, I highly recommend blocking them. Blocking helps smooth out and shape the petals and ensures that each square matches in size, making it easier to join them together neatly.

I used a handheld steamer, but you can also use the steam from your iron. Just be sure to keep the iron hovering above the yarn — never touching it — because acrylic fibers can melt or distort under direct heat.

Arrangement of Squares

Arrange the squares for your chosen size, as seen in the diagrams below.

Lapghan Size:

Large Size:

XL Size:

Joining Your Squares

You will join the squares – first horizontally, then vertically – to form a large rectangle. The slip stitch seam is used (or use your favourite joining method):

Refer to the diagrams above for your chosen size. Starting with row 1, begin by joining squares horizontally along the green dotted lines. Then join the squares vertically along the red dotted lines. Keep tension looser or size up to an N/P (10mm) hook.

Using the slip stitch seam, you will work through the outside loops of each stitch. To begin, line up the first two squares by placing them on top of each other. The wrong sides of both squares should be facing out. With Colour C, place a slip knot on hook:

  1. Insert hook through the back loop of the ch2 (closest to the next stitch to be worked into) of the square on top. Then slide hook through the back loop of the corresponding ch2 of the square on the bottom. Make a slip stitch.
  2. Move along to the next stitch on the top square, insert hook through the outside loop, then insert hook through the outside loop of the stitch on the bottom square. Work a slip stitch.
  3. Repeat step 2 along to the next ch2 corner space.
  4. Work a slip stitch through the back loops of the first two ch2 at the next corner (leave the next two ch2 unworked as these will be worked into when you later join the squares vertically).
  5. Grab the next two squares, place them on top of each other and repeat the process from step 1.
  6. Work in this way, connecting all squares together, until the final two squares have been joined. At the end of row 1, cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
  7. Repeat the above process for the remaining rows, along the green dotted lines.
  8. Once horizontal rows have been joined, repeat the process for the vertical rows along the red dotted lines, ensuring that you chain 1 over the junction where the 4 squares meet.

Border

The border is intentionally simple and modern: two quick rounds that neatly frame your floral squares without overwhelming them.

With Colour Cand a 9mm hook, attach yarn with a sl st to any corner of the blanket, in BLO of chain closest to the next stitch to be worked into.

Round 1. Ch2 (counts as your first st), 1BLOhdc in same ch, *1BLOhdc in each ch until next ch2 corner sp, ensuring that you work 1BLOdc2tog over the ch2s at each seam. At the ch2-sp in the corner of blanket work as follows: 2BLOhdc in 1st ch, ch2, 2BLOhdc in 2nd ch*, repeat from * to * around blanket, at end of round work (2BLOhdc, ch1) in last ch at the last corner, single crochet to top of beg ch2 to join. {photo 12}

Round 2. Working through both loops for this round: SL/shell (see ‘Abbreviations’ on page 13 above) in sp directly below last sc made, *sk next 2 sts, SL/shell in next st*, repeat from * to * around blanket, ensuring that you work a SL/shell in every ch2-sp at each corner of blanket, sl st to 1st sc at beg of round to join.

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Final Thoughts

This flower crochet blanket pattern is truly a joy to make — meditative flower squares, soft chunky stitches, and a final piece that feels both modern and heirloom-worthy.

Whether you make the Lapghan, the Large Throw, or the XL version, I hope this blanket brings warmth, comfort, and a touch of beauty to your home.

Happy crocheting, friends! 🌸🧶✨

FAQ – Flower Crochet Blanket (Cozy Petals Blanket)

What yarn do I need to make the Cozy Petals Blanket?

The Cozy Petals Blanket is made with bulky weight (category 5) yarn, such as Lion Brand Hue + Me. This yarn gives the blanket its chunky texture and excellent stitch definition for the flower granny squares.

Is the Cozy Petals Blanket beginner-friendly?

Yes! This flower crochet blanket is suitable for confident beginners. The stitches are simple, the squares are repetitive and relaxing to make, and the joining and border are very easy.

How many squares do I need for each blanket size?

The Cozy Petals Blanket comes in three sizes—Lapghan, Large, and XL. Each size uses a different number of flower granny squares. Please see the diagrams above. You can also adjust the sizes by adding or removing squares (the yardage for an individual flower granny square is given above).

Do I need to block the squares before joining?

Blocking is optional but recommended. It helps each flower granny square lie flat, match in size, and join more neatly. Use steam only and avoid touching acrylic yarn directly with an iron.

Can I use a different yarn for this flower crochet blanket?

Absolutely. Any bulky (weight 5) yarn will work well. Good substitutes include Premier Anti-Pilling Bamboo Chunky, Brava Bulky, Hayfield Bonus Chunky, and Paintbox Wool Blend Chunky. Just check your gauge.

What hook size is used in this pattern?

You’ll need a 9mm crochet hook. A smooth hook such as the Clover Armour is ideal for working with chunky yarns. A 10mm crochet hook is useful for joining the squares (or keep your tension on the looser side).

Is there a video tutorial for the Cozy Petals Blanket?

Yes! A full step-by-step tutorial is available on my YouTube channel, showing exactly how to make the flower square, join the blanket, and add the border.

Can I get a printable PDF version of the pattern?

Yes! A beautifully formatted, ad-free PDF pattern is available in my Etsy and Fourthwall shops.

Is the Cozy Petals Blanket the same as the Cozy Petals Baby Blanket?

The designs match, but the sizes and colourways differ. The baby blanket version uses only 9 squares, while the full blanket comes in three larger sizes. The baby blanket pattern has its own dedicated post here.

How long does it take to make this blanket?

Because it uses chunky yarn, the Cozy Petals Blanket works up faster than most throw blankets. The Lapghan can be made in a few evenings, while the large and XL sizes will take a bit longer depending on your pace.
