A Cozy Teddy Bear Blanket to Treasure
The Teddy, With Love crochet teddy bear blanket pattern is made from 30 granny squares in total — 15 Teddy Squares and 15 Heart Squares.
Each Teddy Square begins with a brown centre surrounded by a cream granny square. A separate teddy head is then crocheted, the facial features are added, and the head is sewn onto the centre of the square, before being lightly stuffed with a little fibrefill.
For the Heart Squares, a separate crochet heart is attached to a plain cream granny square at three points. Leaving the remaining edges unattached gives the hearts their pretty raised appearance.
Once all 30 squares are complete, they’re arranged in a 5 × 6 layout and joined together with a simple single crochet seam.
A quick two-round border finishes everything off.
The result is a wonderfully cozy blanket filled with little details to discover — from the raised ears and teddy faces to the colourful hearts dotted throughout.
Who Would You Make Teddy, With Love For?
Although teddy bears are often associated with little ones, I didn’t want this design to feel like it could only be used as a baby blanket.
The finished blanket is generously sized at 35 x 41 inches and would make a lovely handmade gift for a child, an older teddy bear lover, or simply someone who loves cozy, nostalgic crochet.
It would also make a particularly special birthday or Christmas gift.
And, of course, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with making one to keep for yourself!
Important safety note: When made with safety eyes and safety noses, this blanket is intended for children aged 4 years and over. If you’re making it for a baby or child under 4, I recommend embroidering the teddy facial features securely with yarn instead.
Those Adorable 3D Teddy Faces!
Of course, the teddy faces are the stars of this blanket.
Each teddy head is crocheted separately and then given its own little face before being attached to the Teddy Base Square.
I’ve lightly stuffed the heads with fiberfill to give them their rounded 3D shape. You only need a small amount — we’re looking for a gentle raised effect rather than a firmly stuffed teddy head.
The ears are left free when the head is sewn to the square, which helps them stand away from the blanket and adds even more dimension.
For my blanket, I used 10 mm safety eyes and 12 × 15 mm felt safety noses.
I also recommend placing a small piece of felt or fleece behind the crochet fabric before securing the washers. This helps distribute the pressure over a larger area and reduces the chance of the safety eyes or nose pulling through the crochet fabric.
The Raised Crochet Hearts
The heart squares add another little three-dimensional detail to the blanket.
Rather than sewing each heart completely flat against its granny square, it’s secured at just three points — at the two upper sections and at the bottom tip. The rest of the heart remains free.
It’s such a simple detail, but it allows the hearts to lift slightly away from the background and complements the raised teddy faces beautifully.
I alternated bubblegum and deep red hearts throughout my blanket, but this would be an easy place to introduce your own colour palette (read on further for some suggestions).
Yarn for the Teddy, With Love Blanket
For my blanket, I used Premier Basix Chunky, a #5 bulky/chunky 100% acrylic yarn.
I chose:
Cream
Butterscotch
Deep Red
Bubblegum
I love the combination of the warm cream and butterscotch with those little pops of pink and deep red. It gives the blanket plenty of colour without losing that cozy, traditional teddy-bear feel.
Premier Basix Chunky is quite a substantial #5 yarn, so do bear this in mind if you decide to substitute another chunky yarn. Some yarns labelled as chunky can be noticeably thinner.
Yarn Substitutes
You don’t have to use Premier Basix Chunky to make this crochet teddy bear blanket pattern, but it’s important to choose a yarn that gives you a similar gauge.
Premier Basix Chunky is a substantial #5 bulky/chunky yarn and may be thicker than some other yarns labelled as chunky. If you’re substituting another yarn, I strongly recommend making a Heart Base Square first and checking its measurements before continuing with the rest of the blanket.
Two suitable alternatives are:
- Emu Classic Super Chunky Yarn
- Himalaya Yarn Everyday Big
Whichever yarn you choose, aim for a finished square measuring approximately 6¼ in (16 cm) after blocking. If necessary, adjust your crochet hook size to achieve the correct gauge.
Keep in mind that substituting yarn may also affect the finished size, drape and amount of yarn required, so the quantities listed in this pattern should be used as a guide when working with a different yarn.
How Much Yarn Will I Need?
For the blanket shown, you’ll need approximately:
Cream – 885 yd / 809 m – 8 balls
Butterscotch – 255 yd / 233 m – 3 balls
Deep Red – 75 yd / 68 m – 1 ball
Bubblegum – 66 yd / 60 m – 1 ball
Premier Basix Chunky comes in 100 g / 117 yd / 107 m balls.
You’ll also need an 8 mm crochet hook. I used a slightly larger 9 mm hook when joining my squares, which is optional but can help prevent the seams from becoming too tight.
Make It Your Own – Changing the Colours
One of the easiest ways to make this crochet teddy bear blanket pattern your own is to change the colours of the hearts!
I used bubblegum pink and deep red for my sample blanket, which gives lovely pops of colour against the cream background and butterscotch teddy bears. But there’s no need to use the same combination as me.
You could try:
- Blue and red for a bright, classic combination
- Light blue and navy for a cooler, more tonal look
- Pink and lilac for a softer, pretty palette
- Sage green and mustard for a warm, nature-inspired feel
- Rust and mustard for a cozy autumnal version
- Red and green for a Christmas Teddy, With Love Blanket
- Two shades of pink, blue or purple for a simple tonal effect
You could even use a different colour for every heart and turn it into a cheerful scrap-yarn project!
I’d keep the cream background consistent throughout the blanket (or another very light colour), as this helps the teddy faces and colourful hearts stand out beautifully. You can then have fun choosing heart colours to suit the person you’re making the blanket for, their favourite colours, or simply the yarn you already have in your stash.
And, of course, you can change the teddy colour too! A soft grey, caramel, golden brown or even a creamy white would create a completely different little family of bears.

Pattern Notes
- The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout.
- There are 30 squares in total: 15 Teddy Squares and 15 Heart Squares.
- Each Teddy Square consists of a Teddy Base Square and a separate raised 3D Teddy Head Appliqué, which is sewn to the centre of the base square and lightly stuffed. For round 5 of the teddy appliqué, make sure to place the markers (PM) in the back loop only (BLO) of the stitch where indicated.
- Each Heart Square consists of a Heart Base Square and a separate Heart Appliqué. The heart is attached at three points, leaving the remaining edges free to create a raised 3D effect.
- Beginning chains count as a stitch only where stated in the pattern.
- Working in Continuous Rounds.The first few rounds of the teddy base square and teddy head applique are worked in continuous rounds. This means you will not join with a slip stitch at the end of each round. Instead, continue working the first stitch of the next round directly into the first stitch of the previous round. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you work to help keep track of where each round begins.
- The squares are joined with a single crochet seam. An optional 9 mm crochet hook may be used for joining, or use a slightly looser tension to help prevent the seams from pulling.
- When made with safety eyes and safety noses, this blanket is intended for children aged 4 years and over. For babies and children under 4 years, omit these components and embroider the facial features with yarn instead. Gauge / Tension
Using an 8 mm crochet hook, make one Heart Base Square following the instructions below. Block it according to the instructions below. After blocking, the square should measure approximately 6¼ in (16 cm). All Teddy Base Squares and Heart Base Squares should measure this size.
If your square is more than ¼ in (1 cm) smaller than the stated measurement, try using a larger hook. If your square is more than ¼ in (1 cm) larger, try using a smaller hook.

Instructions
Teddy Base Square (Make 15)
Before you begin: Please read the Working in Continuous Rounds section in the Pattern Notes above.
With Colour B and 8mm hook: Make a magic circle or ch4 and sl st to 1st ch to form a circle.
Round 1. Ch1, 6 sc in the magic circle. Do not join the round. Instead, PM in the first sc of the round to mark the beg of the round, [6 sts].
Round 2. 2sc in next 6 sts [12 sts].
Round 3. *2sc in next st, 1sc in next st*, repeat from * to * 6 times, [18 sts].
Round 4. 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st, *1sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * to * 5 times, ending with 1sc in last st, sl st to 1st sc or make an invisible join, [24 sts].
For a neater finish, I recommend making an invisible join instead. See the video tutorial for a step-by-step demonstration.
Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
Join Colour A with a sl st in the back bump (also known as the third loop) of any stitch from the previous round:
Round 5 is worked entirely in the back bump (BB).
Round 5. TIP: If you used the magic circle method in round 1, make sure you weave in the yarn tail securely to help prevent the centre of your circle from unravelling.
Teddy Head Appliqué (Make 15)
With Colour B and 8mm hook: Make a magic circle or ch4 and sl st to 1st ch to form a circle.
Round 1. Ch1, 6 sc in the magic circle. Do not join the round. Instead, PM in the first sc of the round to mark the beg of the round, [6 sts].
Round 2. 2sc in next 6 sts [12 sts].
Round 3. *2sc in next st, 1sc in next st*, repeat from * to * 6 times, [18 sts].
Round 4. 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st, *1sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * to * 5 times, ending with 1sc in last st, [24 sts].
In the next round (round 5) it’s important to place the stitch markers (PM) where indicated, as we’ll use these as reference points later when attaching the teddy head appliqué to the teddy base square.
Round 5. 1sc in next 8 sts, PM in the BLO of the next st, then work (3hdc, 1 sc) in the FLO of the same st (1st ear complete), 1sl st in next 6 sts, PM in the BLO of the next st, then work (1sc, 3hdc) in the FLO of the same st (2nd ear complete), 1sc in last 8 sts, sl st to 1st sc of the round or make an invisible join, PM in the BLO of the sl st or invisible join (for sewing later), [24 sts].
IMPORTANT TIP: Whether you make a slip stitch or invisible join, leave a long tail approximately 32 in (80 cm) in length for sewing.
Snout for Teddy Head (Make 15)
With Colour A and 8mm hook:
Make a magic circle or ch4 and sl st to 1st ch to form a circle.
Round 1. Ch1, 6 sc in the magic circle. Do not join the round. Instead, PM in the first sc of the round to mark the beg of the round, [6 sts].
Round 2. 2sc in next 6 sts, sl st to 1st sc or make an invisible join [12 sts].
For a neater finish, I recommend making an invisible join instead. This will create a smoother edge and makes it easier to sew the snout to the Teddy Base Square.
IMPORTANT TIP: Whether you make a sl st or invisible join, make sure that you leave a long tail approximately 15 in (38 cm) long for sewing the snout to the teddy base square.
TIP: If you used the magic circle method in round 1, make sure you weave in the yarn tail securely to help prevent the centre of the snout from unravelling.
Teddy’s Facial Features
Attach the Safety Nose
Place the safety nose on the front of the snout, positioning the stud anywhere between rounds 1 and 2:
Push the stud through the crochet fabric to the back of the snout. Cut a small piece of felt large enough to cover the stud at the back of the work. Push the stud through the felt, then secure the nose by firmly pressing the washer onto the stud (if you find it difficult to push the stud through, carefully make a small hole in the felt with a pair of scissors first). Make sure the washer clicks into position at least a couple of times so that it is securely attached:
Attach the Safety Eyes
Next, attach the safety eyes to the Teddy Head Appliqué. Insert one safety eye between rounds 2 and 3 on the left side of the teddy’s face and the second safety eye between rounds 2 and 3 on the right side. Position both eyes level with the centre of the face and make sure they are evenly spaced:
Cut a piece of felt measuring at least 2.5 × 1 in (6.5 × 2.5 cm). The felt should be large enough to cover both eye studs at the back of the appliqué. Push both studs through the felt. If you find it difficult to push the studs through, carefully make a small hole in the felt with a pair of scissors first. Place a washer over each stud and press firmly into place. Make sure each washer clicks into position at least a couple of times so that it is securely attached:
Sew on the Snout
Thread the long yarn tail from the snout onto a yarn needle. Position the snout centrally between the two eyes. Using the yarn tail, begin sewing around the edge of the snout to attach it securely to the Teddy Head Appliqué. This technique is demonstrated step by step in the video tutorial.
When you have just a few stitches remaining, take a small amount of fiberfill and gently stuff the snout. Be careful not to overstuff it—you only need enough to give the snout a little shape and dimension.
Continue sewing to close the remaining stitches. Once the snout is securely attached, bring the yarn to the back of the Teddy Head Appliqué and make a few tight knots to secure it. Cut the remaining yarn.
Safety Information – For Young Children
When made using safety eyes and safety noses, this blanket is intended for children aged 4 years and over. If you are making the blanket for a baby or child under 4 years of age, I recommend omitting the safety eyes and safety noses and embroidering the facial features using yarn instead. Always ensure all components are securely attached and check the blanket regularly for signs of wear, damage or loose parts.
Sewing the Teddy Head Appliqué to the Teddy Base Square
NOTE: The ear stitches—3 hdc and 1 sc at each ear—are left free and are not sewn to the Teddy Base Square. This allows the ears to remain raised from the surface of the square.
Begin by positioning the Teddy Head Appliqué over the brown centre of the Teddy Base Square.
Take the stitch marker positioned at the back of the right ear and align it with a stitch from round 4 at the top right-hand corner of the Teddy Base Square. Insert the stitch marker through the back loop only (BLO) of this stitch to temporarily secure the two pieces together:
From this stitch, count 7 stitches to the left along round 4 of the base square. Insert the stitch marker positioned at the back of the left ear through the BLO of the 7th stitch. There should now be 6 free stitches between the two marked stitches (and 6 slip stitches between both ears on the Teddy Head Appliqué):
Next, we will secure the centre bottom of the teddy head. Starting at the stitch marked behind the right ear, count 8 stitches down the side of round 4. Take the stitch marker that was placed in the centre bottom BLO of the Teddy Head Appliqué at the end of round 5 and insert it through the BLO of this stitch on the Teddy Base Square:
You should now have three stitch markers holding the Teddy Head Appliqué securely in the correct position—one behind each ear and one at the centre bottom.
Thread the long yarn tail from the Teddy Head Appliqué onto a yarn needle. Working through the back loops only of both the Teddy Head Appliqué and the Teddy Base Square, use a whip stitch to sew the two pieces together. Remove the stitch markers as you reach them.
Continue whip stitching around the teddy head until 4 stitches remain unsewn. Gently add a small amount of fiberfill through the opening to give the teddy head some shape and dimension, taking care not to overstuff.
Whip stitch the remaining 4 stitches together to close the opening.
Once the Teddy Head Appliqué is completely attached, bring the yarn tail through to the back of your work. Weave the end securely through the stitches in several different directions to secure and hide it, then trim any excess yarn.

Heart Base Square (Make 15)
Using Colour A and 8mm hook: Make a magic circle or ch4 and sl st to 1st ch to form a circle.
Round 1. Ch3 (counts as your 1st dc), 2dc in circle, ch2, (3dc in circle, ch2) twice, (3dc in circle, ch1), sc to top of beg ch3 to join, [4 × 3dc groups, 3 × ch2 sps, 1 x ch1 sp].
Round 2. 1sc in sp immediately below the sc made at the end of the previous round, ch2 (counts as your 1st dc), 2dc in same sp, *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch2 sp*, repeat from * to * 3 times total, (3dc, ch1) into the 1st sp of the round to complete the final corner, 1sc into top of beg ch2 to join round, [2 × 3dc groups on each side of square, 3 × ch2 sps, 1 x ch1 sp].
Round 3. 1sc in sp immediately below the sc made at the end of the previous round, ch2 (counts as your 1st dc), 2dc in same sp, 3dc in gap between next two 3dc groups, *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch2 sp, 3dc in gap between next two 3dc groups*, repeat from * to * 3 times total, (3dc, ch1) into the 1st sp of the round to complete the final corner, 1sc into top of beg ch2 to join round, [3 × 3dc clusters on each side of square, 3 × ch2 sps, 1 x ch1 sp].
Round 4. 1sc in sp immediately below the sc made at the end of the previous round, ch2 (counts as your 1st dc), 2dc in same sp, (3dc in gap between next two 3dc groups) twice, *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch2 sp, (3dc in gap between next two 3dc groups) twice*, repeat from * to * 3 times total, (3dc, ch2) into the 1st sp of the round to complete the final corner, sl st into top of beg ch2 or make an invisible join, [4 × 3dc clusters on each side of square, 4 × ch2 sps].
Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
Heart Appliqué (Make 15)
Make 8 red hearts with Colour C and 7 pink hearts with Colour D
With 8mm hook, make a magic circle or ch4 and sl st to 1st ch to form a circle.
Round 1. Ch2 (counts as your 1st dc), 12hdc in the centre of the circle, sl st to top of beg ch2 to join, do not weave in the starting yarn tail yet; this will be secured later. [13 sts].
In the next round (round 2) it’s important to place the stitch markers (PM) where indicated, as we’ll use these as reference points later when attaching the heart appliqué to the heart base square.
Round 2. Sk next st, (1 hdc, PM in hdc just made, 7 dc) in next st, 1hdc in next st, 2hdc in next 2 sts, (2hdc, 1dc, PM in dc just made, 2hdc) in next st, 2hdc in next 2 sts, 1hdc in next st, (7dc, 1hdc, PM in hdc just made) in next st, sk last 2 sts, remove hook from the active loop and gently pull the loop upwards to elongate it slightly. Insert your hook from the back of the heart to the front, into the space between the last stitch and the ch2 of round 1. Place the active loop back onto your hook and pull it through to the back of the heart, ch1 [31 sts]:
Cut yarn, fasten off and tie the starting and finishing yarn tails together with a couple of secure knots, then weave in both ends securely.
Attaching the Heart Appliqué to the Heart Base Square
With Colour A, cut 3 lengths of yarn, each measuring at least 6 in (15 cm). We will use these to secure the heart at three points: the top left, top right and bottom tip.
First Attachment Point – Top Left
Step 1. Thread the first length of yarn onto your tapestry needle. Locate the first stitch of the final round of the Heart Appliqué, which is marked with a stitch marker. From the marked stitch, count 4 stitches to the left, not including the marked stitch in your count:
Step 2. Insert your needle through the loop directly below the back bump of the 4th stitch and pull the yarn through, leaving approximately equal lengths of yarn on either side. Tie the two yarn tails together with a couple of secure knots:
Step 3. Thread one of the yarn tails back onto your tapestry needle. Position the Heart Appliqué centrally over the Heart Base Square. At the top left-hand corner of round 3 of the Heart Base Square, insert your needle under 2 top loops of a corner 3dc group and pull the yarn through. Tie the two yarn tails together with a couple of secure knots to hold the Heart Appliqué in position:
Step 4. Thread the yarn tails onto your needle, one at a time, and bring them through to the back of the Heart Base Square. Weave in the ends securely on the back of the square.
Second Attachment Point – Top Right
Step 1. Take the second length of yarn and thread it onto your tapestry needle.
Locate the last stitch of the final round of the Heart Appliqué, which is also marked with a stitch marker. From the marked stitch, count 3 stitches to the right, not including the marked stitch in your count:
Step 2. Insert your needle through the loop directly below the back bump of the 3rd stitch. Pull the yarn through so that you have approximately equal lengths on either side, then tie the two yarn tails together with a couple of secure knots.
Steps 3 & 4. Repeat the same process used in steps 3 and 4 for the first attachment point above, but this time secure the Heart Appliqué beneath the 2 top loops at the top right-hand corner of round 3 of the Heart Base Square:
Third Attachment Point – Bottom Tip
Step 1. Thread the third and final length of yarn onto your tapestry needle. Locate the stitch marker at the bottom tip of the Heart Appliqué:
Step 2. Insert your needle through the loop directly below the back bump of this marked stitch. Pull the yarn through and secure with a couple of knots.
Steps 3 & 4. Repeat the same process used in steps 3 and 4 for the first two attachment points above, but this time locate the middle 3dc group along the bottom of round 3 of the Heart Base Square. Insert your needle under a couple of loops from this 3dc group and pull the yarn through:
Blocking Squares
Before joining your squares, I recommend blocking them to help even out the stitches and ensure that they are all a similar size and shape. This will make arranging and joining the squares easier and give your finished blanket a neater appearance.
I used a handheld steamer to block my squares, but you can also use the steam from an iron. Whichever method you choose, do not allow the steamer or iron to touch the yarn directly.
For the Heart Squares, I gently steamed the entire square, including the heart appliqué, while carefully shaping the sides and corners.
For the Teddy Squares, I steamed around the outer border of each square to shape and straighten the edges. Avoid steaming the 3D teddy face, as this may flatten or distort the shape of the appliqué and stuffing.
Gently shape each square so that the sides are straight and the corners are well defined. Aim to make all of your squares approximately the same size, taking care not to overstretch them.
Allow the squares to cool and dry completely before arranging and joining them.
TIP: Pay particular attention to the corners and outer edges when blocking. Consistently shaped squares will make the joining process much easier and help create a neat, even blanket.
Square Arrangement
Starting with row number 1, begin by joining squares horizontally along the green lines. Then join the squares vertically along the red lines from numbers 6 – 9. Full details in next section below.
Joining Squares
Arrange all of the Teddy Squares and Heart Squares as shown in the square arrangement diagram above. Once you are happy with the layout, we will join the squares using Colour A. Keep tension looser or size up to an M/N (9mm) hook.
Using the single crochet seam, you will work through the inside loops of each square. To begin, line up the first two squares by placing them on top of each other, right sides facing out.
- Insert hook through the back loop of the corner ch2 (closest to the next stitch to be worked into) of the square on top. Then slide hook through the front loop of the corresponding corner ch2 of the square on the bottom. Place a slip knot on hook, pull it through both loops, (ch1, 1sc) in same st.
- Move along to the next stitch on the top square, insert hook through the inside loop, then insert hook through the inside loop of the stitch on the bottom square. Work a single crochet.
- Repeat step 2 along to the next ch2 corner space.
- When you get to the next corner, insert hook through the back loop of the first chain of the square on top. Then slide hook through the front loop of the next chain of the square on the bottom. Make a single crochet (leave the next two chains unworked, as these will be worked into when you join the squares vertically later).
- Grab the next two squares, place them on top of each other and repeat the process from step 1.
- Work in this way, connecting all squares together, until the final two squares have been joined. At the end of row 1, cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
- Repeat the above process for the remaining rows, along the green dotted lines.
- Once all the horizontal rows have been joined, repeat the process vertically along the red dotted lines. At each junction where 4 squares meet, work into the remaining chains, then ch1 before continuing the seam. This extra ch 1 helps prevent the seam from pulling at the junction.
Border
Once you have joined your squares, you will then finish your blanket off with a border consisting of 2 rounds.
See the ‘Special Stitches’ section on page 10 above for working the EXdc2tog across the seams in round 1.
With Color A and 8 mm hook, make a slip knot and place it on your hook, then insert your hook into any ch2 corner sp of the blanket.
Round 1. (1 sc, ch2) in same ch2 space (counts as your 1st st), (2dc, ch1) in same sp, *(3 dc, ch1) in gap between next two 3dc groups to next ch2 corner sp [ensuring that you work as follows at each seam: 1 EXdc in the first ch2 sp, 1 EXdc2tog across the two ch2 sps at the seam, 1 EXdc in the second ch2 sp, ch 1]. In the ch2 sp at the corner of blanket, work (3dc, ch2, 3dc, ch1)*. Repeat from * to * around all sides of the blanket, finishing with (3dc, ch1) into the 1st sp of the round to complete the final corner, 1sc to top of beg ch2 to join, [25 groups along each long side, 21 groups along each short side, 3 × ch2 corner sps, 1 x ch2 corner sp]:
Round 2. 1sc in sp immediately below the sc made at the end of the previous round, ch2 (counts as your 1st dc), 3dc in same sp, (1sc, ch1) in next ch1 sp, *(3 dc in centre st of next 3dc group, (1sc, ch1) in next ch1 sp) to next ch2 corner sp. Omit the ch1 immediately before the ch2 corner sp, then work 7dc shell in the corner sp, (1sc, ch1) in next ch1 sp * Repeat from * to * around all sides of the blanket, finishing with 3dc into the 1st sp of the round to complete the final corner, sl st to top of beg ch2 to join, [23 groups along each long side, 19 groups along each short side, 7dc shell in each corner].
Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Is this crochet teddy bear blanket pattern suitable for beginners?
I’ve rated this crochet teddy bear blanket pattern as Intermediate / Level 3. The individual crochet stitches are not particularly difficult, but there are several stages involved, including making and assembling the 3D teddy faces and hearts, joining the squares and adding the border.
If you need a little extra help, my full step-by-step video tutorial will guide you through making the blanket from start to finish.
Can I make this blanket for a baby?
Yes, but I recommend embroidering the teddy’s facial features with yarn rather than using safety eyes and safety noses when making the blanket for a baby or child under 4 years of age.
When made with safety eyes and safety noses, this crochet teddy bear blanket pattern is intended for children aged 4 years and over.
Can I use a different yarn?
Yes! You can substitute Premier Basix Chunky with another similar #5 bulky/chunky weight yarn. Emu Classic Super Chunky and Himalaya Yarn Everyday Big are two suitable alternatives.
Premier Basix Chunky is a substantial #5 yarn, so some yarns labelled chunky may be thinner. I strongly recommend making a gauge swatch before starting your blanket.
Can I use different colours?
Absolutely! Changing the heart colours is an easy way to personalise your blanket. Try blue and red, pink and lilac, sage and mustard, or even use a different colour for every heart.
You can change the teddy colour too – grey, caramel, golden brown or creamy white would all give your blanket a different look.
How many squares do I need to make?
You’ll make 30 squares altogether: 15 Teddy Squares and 15 Heart Squares. Follow the layout diagram included in the pattern to see the exact placement of each square.
How big is the finished Teddy, With Love Blanket?
The finished blanket measures approximately 35 × 41 in (89 × 104 cm). Each square measures approximately 6¼ in (16 cm) after blocking.
Do I need to block the squares?
I recommend blocking your completed squares before joining. This helps them achieve a more consistent size and shape and makes joining them easier.
When blocking the Teddy Squares, steam around the outer edges only and avoid steaming the raised teddy faces.
