About the Baby Cozy Petals Blanket

This blanket is made from 9 chunky flower granny squares arranged in a 3×3 layout. Each motif features a textured 3D flower at the center, framed by a soft background colour that gives the blanket its warm, modern look.

Just like the throw-sized version, this design is relaxing, beginner-friendly, and wonderfully portable. Work one square at a time for the perfect “take-along” project.

This version works up quickly thanks to the bulky yarn and simple construction, making it an ideal weekend project or thoughtful handmade gift for new parents.

Yarn You’ll Need

For the Baby Cozy Petals Blanket, you’ll need a soft and durable bulky weight (category 5 / 12 ply) yarn that gives the squares their beautiful chunky texture. I used Lion Brand Hue + Me, which offers modern colours, lovely stitch definition, and a cozy feel due to the blend of 80% acrylic and 20% wool.

I absolutely loved working with Lion Brand Hue + Me for this project. It’s very soft and despite containing some wool, is not scratchy at all. The bulky weight makes every stitch feel plush and it’s so satisfying to see how quickly the squares work up.

Plus, it’s durable, machine washable and dryable, and holds its shape well, making it a fantastic choice for a baby blanket that will be snuggled, washed, and loved for years!

Colour Inspiration

For this design, I used the colours Salt and Mustard for the flowers — a bright, cheerful combination that pops beautifully against the background. And for the background you can choose either Sea Glass for a fresh, tranquil look or Rosewater for a sweet, vintage-inspired appearance. Both versions feel warm, cozy, and timeless.

Whatever palette you choose from the Hue + Me range for your Baby Cozy Petals Blanket, you can be sure that this pattern will adapt beautifully to any colour choice.

Construction Overview

The Cozy Petals Baby Blanket is quick and simple to make:

  • 9 flower granny squares
  • 7 rounds per square:
    • Round 1: flower center
    • Rounds 2–3: raised petals
    • Rounds 4–7: background rounds that frame the flower
  • Squares are blocked (recommended), then joined with a slip stitch seam
  • Finished with a simple 3-round border that frames the design beautifully

Blocking Your Squares

I recommend blocking your squares before joining them so they lie flat and match in size. Blocking them will also ensure that the petals do not scrunch or curl up too much. I used a handheld steamer, but you can also use steam from your iron — just make sure the iron never touches the acrylic yarn directly, as it can melt the fibers.

Pattern Notes

  • US crochet terminology used throughout.
  • One size is available. If you would like to make the XL, Large and Lapghan versions of this blanket, you can view the free pattern here (coming soon).
  • You can use any #5 / bulky / chunky / 12 ply yarn for this project, providing you meet the gauge as detailed below.
  • Lion Brand Hue + Me was used for this design. A list of suitable yarn substitutes is listed below.
  • I made two versions of this blanket: One in the background colour Sea Glass (turquoise) and one using Rose Water (peachy dogwood). Each version has chunky flowers made from Colour A (Mustard) for the centre and Colour B (Salt) for the petals.
  • The flower granny square is worked over 7 simple rounds. Round 1 creates the center of the flower, while Rounds 2 and 3 form the raised, 3D textured petals. Rounds 4 through 7 build the background and frame the flower beautifully, giving each square its chunky, modern look.
  • For beginners, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch made at the beginning of each round.
  • When joining the squares together (using the slip stitch seam), keep your tension fairly loose. Or move up a hook size to an N/P (10mm) crochet hook.
  • Support for my crochet patterns is available exclusively through my Facebook Group. If you’d like help or have questions while working through a pattern, I encourage you to join the group!

Lion Brand Hue + Me, 137 yds / 4.4 oz (125m / 125g) in the following colours:

Both Versions (pink & turquoise)

Yarn A – Mustard (golden yellow): 1 ball (22 yds required)

OPTIONAL: N/P (10mm) hook for joining squares

Extras

1x stitch marker; yarn needle; scissors; steamer or steam from iron for blocking squares

Yarn Substitutes

If you substitute, just make sure to check yardage / meters per ball so you buy enough for your blanket.

Premier Yarns Anti Pilling Bamboo Chunky 3.5oz. / 131yds (100g / 120m)

Brava Bulky 3.5oz. / 136 yds (100g / 124m)

Hayfield Bonus Chunky 3.5oz. / 150yds (100g / 137m)

Paintbox Yarns Wool Blend Chunky 3.5oz. / 131 yds (100g / 120m)

Flower Square Yardage

If you would like to adjust the number of flower granny squares and / or add more squares to the blanket, each individual square uses the following amount of yarn:

  • Centre of flower — 2.25g / 2.4 yds
  • Petals — 16.77g / 18.1 yds
  • Background colour — 34g / 37 yds

Gauge / tension

Test your gauge (tension) with a sample flower square before you begin.

With a Size M/N (9mm) crochet hook, each blocked flower square measures 10 x 10 in / 25 x 25 cm.

If your tension is tight and your square is smaller, try using a larger hook. If your tension is loose and your square is larger, use a smaller hook.

Instructions

Flower Granny Square

Make 9 flower granny squares.

With 9mm hook and Colour A:

Make a magic ring or ch6 and sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.

Round 1. Ch2 (counts as your first st), 9dc into ring, sl st to top of beg ch2 to join, [10 sts].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Attach Colour B to any st with a sl st:

Round 2. Ch2 (counts as your first st), 1dc in same st, (2dc in next st) 9 times, sl st to top of beg ch2 to join, [20 sts].

Round 3. Sl st in next st, (ch2, 1tr) in same st, 3tr in next st, (1tr, 1dc) in next st, sl st in next st (1st petal complete), *1dc, 1tr) in next st, 3tr in next st, (1tr, 1dc) in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat from * to * around, end with a sl st at base of beg ch2 to join. [40 sts, 5 petals).

Round 4. *Ch6 (fairly tightly), sk first petal and sl st in next sl st right before next petal*, repeat from * to * around, sl st to 1st sl st to join, [5x ch6 sps].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Before starting round 5, make sure that the ch6 sps are at the back of your work. With right side facing up, attach colour C (pink) or D (turquoise) with a sl st to any ch6 sp at the back of your work.

Round 5. Ch2 (counts as your first st), 7dc in same sp, *8dc in next ch6 sp*, repeat from * to * around, sl st to top of beg ch2 to join, [40 sts].

Round 6. Ch3, (counts as your first st), 1EXdc in same st, 1dc in next 9 sts, *(2EXdc, ch2, 2EXdc) in next st (corner made), 1dc in next 9 sts*, repeat from * to * 3 times, end with (2EXdc, ch2) at base of beg ch3, work a single crochet to top of beg ch3 to join, [13 sts on each side of square].

Round 7. Ch3, (counts as your first st), 1EXdc in ch2 sp, 1dc in next 13 sts, *(2EXdc, ch2, 2EXdc) in next ch2-sp, 1dc in next 13 sts*, repeat from * to * 3 times, end with (2EXdc, ch2) in last ch2 corner sp , sl st to top of beg ch3 to join, or make an invisible join (easier when seaming later), [17 sts on each side of square].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Arrangement of Squares

Arrange your squares as seen in the diagram below. It’s a good idea to give your squares a quick block beforehand. I used a handheld steamer, but you can also use the steam from your iron (keep the iron hovering above the yarn).

Pin

Joining Squares

Refer to the diagram above. Starting with row 1, begin by joining squares horizontally along the green dotted lines. Then join the squares vertically along the red dotted lines. Keep tension looser or size up to an N/P (10mm) hook.

Using the slip stitch seam, you will work through the outside loops of each stitch. To begin, line up the first two squares by placing them on top of each other. The wrong sides of both squares should be facing out. With Colour C (pink) or D (turquoise), place a slip knot on hook:

  1. Insert hook through the back loop of the ch2 (closest to the next stitch to be worked into) of the square on top. Then slide hook through the back loop of the corresponding ch2 of the square on the bottom. Make a slip stitch.
  2. Move along to the next stitch on the top square, insert hook through the outside loop, then insert hook through the outside loop of the stitch on the bottom square. Work a slip stitch.
  3. Repeat step 2 along to the next ch2 corner space.
  4. Work a slip stitch through the back loops of the first two ch2 at the next corner (leave the next two ch2 unworked as these will be worked into when you later join the squares vertically).
  5. Grab the next two squares, place them on top of each other and repeat the process from step 1.
  6. Work in this way, connecting all squares together, until the final two squares have been joined. At the end of row 1, cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
  7. Repeat the above process for the remaining rows, along the green dotted lines.
  8. Once horizontal rows have been joined, repeat the process for the vertical rows along the red dotted lines, ensuring that you chain 1 over the junction where the 4 squares meet.

Border

After joining your squares with a slip stitch seam, work the 3-round border around the entire blanket. This simple edge adds just the right amount of structure without taking away from the floral design.

With Colour C or D and a 9mm hook, attach yarn with a sl st to any corner of the blanket, in BLO of chain closest to the next stitch to be worked into.

Round 1. Ch2 (counts as your first st), 1BLOdc in same ch, *1BLOdc in each ch until next ch2 corner sp, ensuring that you work 1BLOEXdc2tog over the ch2s at each seam. At the ch2-sp in the corner of blanket work as follows: 2BLOdc in 1st ch, ch2, 2BLOdc in 2nd ch*, repeat from * to * around blanket, at end of round work (2BLOdc, ch2) in last ch at the last corner, sl st or make an invisible join to top of beg ch2 to join.

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

With Colour B (both pink & turquoise versions), attach yarn with a sc to any corner of the blanket, in BLO of chain closest to the next stitch to be worked into.

Round 2. 2sc in BLO of same ch, *1BLOsc in each ch until next ch2 corner sp, at the ch2-sp in the corner of blanket work as follows: 2BLOsc in 1st ch, 2BLOsc in 2nd ch*, repeat from * to * around blanket, at end of round work 2BLOsc in last ch, sl st to 1st sc at beg of round to join.

In the next round, work stitches through both loops.

Round 3. Ch2 (counts as 1st dc), 2dc in same st (at base of ch2), sk next st, sl st in next st, *sk next st, 4dc (shell) in next st, sk next st, sl st in next st*, repeat from * to * around blanket, ensuring that you work 5dc in the following 3 corners of blanket, work 2dc in 1st st of round (at base of beg ch2), sl st to top of beg ch2 to join.

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing

Weave in all ends, give the blanket a final steam block if desired, and your beautiful handmade baby blanket is ready to gift or enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different yarn for this blanket?

Yes! Any bulky weight (category 5) yarn will work well. Great substitutes include Premier Yarns Anti-Pilling Bamboo Chunky, Brava Bulky, Hayfield Bonus Chunky, and Paintbox Wool Blend Chunky. Just check your gauge and adjust your hook size if needed.

How many squares do I need for the baby blanket?

The Cozy Petals Baby Blanket uses 9 squares total arranged in a simple 3×3 layout.

Do I need to block the squares before joining?

Blocking is optional but highly recommended. It helps to shape the petals, and ensure your squares lie flat and match in size. A handheld steamer works great — or use steam from an iron, keeping the iron above the yarn (never touching acrylic directly).

Are the instructions written in US or UK terms?

All instructions are written in US crochet terms.

What hook size did you use?

I used a 9mm Clover hook, which glides smoothly through chunky yarn and makes crocheting the raised 3D petals much easier.

Is this pattern beginner-friendly?

Yes! The squares are simple, repetitive, and easy to memorize. Confident beginners should have no trouble with this project, and there’s a video tutorial to help with the steps.

Is there a PDF version available?

Yes — you can purchase a printable, ad-free PDF pattern in my Etsy shop here. It’s perfect for crocheting offline or keeping in your pattern binder.

Is there a matching throw-size version?

Yes! The Cozy Petals design also comes in Lapghan, Large, and XL throw sizes. You can find the full free pattern in a separate blog post here.

How long does this blanket take to make?

Because it uses chunky yarn and only nine squares, this blanket works up quickly — many crocheters finish it in just a weekend.

Can I customize the colours?

Absolutely! The flower and background colours are easy to swap out. Please look at the gorgeous colour range from Lion Brand Hue + Me for inspiration!
