WHAT IS A CORNER TO CORNER PATTERN?

With this corner to corner (C2C) pattern you will start in the bottom corner of the blanket and finish in the top corner.

The blanket is divided into two sections:

SECTION ONE

Beginning in the bottom corner, section one is worked in diagonal rows. You will work increases (at each row end) to grow the length and width of the blanket. At the end of this section, your blanket will be triangle-shaped:

section one
SECTION TWO

In this section, decrease stitches will be worked (at each row end) in order to turn the blanket from a triangle in to a square. You will finish working in the top corner:

section two

To make my blanket I used one ball of self-striping Sirdar Snuggly Pattercake

I used just under half the weight of my yarn cake for section one. I used the remaining half to work on section two. You can find more details below in the ‘Pattern Notes’ section.

NOT YOUR TRADITIONAL STITCH

The traditional corner to corner (C2C) pattern uses the block stitch, which consists of little squares. They are typically made up of 3 double crochet stitches.

In this corner to corner crochet blanket pattern, I used a variation of the suzette stitch. Here, you’ll alternate single crochet and double crochet stitches. The single crochets are worked on top of single crochet stitches. And the double crochets are worked on top of double crochets stitches.

There is only one row to repeat for each section… it’s a really quick and easy pattern to work up!

And the texture created by this stitch is especially perfect for a baby blanket as it’s dense, yet soft. It’s perfect for keeping your little one snug and comfortable!

YARN USED

I used a weight 3 (DK/ light worsted / 8ply) yarn for this project. You can use a unicoloured yarn or – as in my case – I opted to use a beautiful self-striping yarn from the Sirdar Snuggly Pattercake range.

This yarn has been specially made for babies’ skin as it’s made from a very soft blend of acrylic and nylon. You can throw it in the washing machine and dryer no problem – it holds up very well to frequent washing and stays soft also.

Another great feature of this yarn is that, apart from at the beginning and end, there are no ends to weave in as all the colour changes are done for you!

And as you’ll be working your rows diagonally, the colour changes are really well disguised and subtle.

ALTERNATIVE YARN

You can make this corner to corner crochet blanket in any weight of yarn that you like.

So, if you would like to make a bigger blanket and you have your eye on a fun, self-striping yarn that is a weight 4 (worsted / aran / 10 ply) then go for it!

Whatever weight of yarn you opt for, I would suggest that you use a crochet hook that is at least one size bigger than the recommended hook size (as listed on the ball band).

And if you want to make the same size of blanket as mine and you can’t get your hands on the Sirdar Snuggly Pattercake, then a suitable alternative would be Lionbrand Mandala Baby (another soft, colour-changing yarn).

SIMPLE BORDER

I decided to add a simple border in a contrasting colour to my corner to corner crochet blanket.

Made from five easy rounds, it will give your blanket a more polished look and really make the colours pop.

PATTERN NOTES
  • US crochet terms used throughout.
  • This pattern uses a variation of the suzette stitch, which incorporates alternating single crochet and double crochet stitches. It is reversible.
  • The blanket is square. It is worked corner to corner (C2C).
  • There are two sections: Section one is worked in rows. You will work increases (at each row end) to grow the length and width of the blanket. At the end of this section, the blanket will be triangle-shaped. (photo 1)
  • Section two – decrease stitches will be worked (at each row end) in order to turn the blanket from a triangle in to a square. (photo 2)
  • If you are using a self-striping yarn cake, pull from the center of the ball.
  • Also, it’s advisable to weigh the yarn cake on some kitchen scales before starting.
  • I used 1 x 150g(3.5oz) ball of Sirdar Snuggly Pattercake self-striping yarn. If you also use this self-striping yarn, follow the instructions for section one and stop working the increase rows when either side of the blanket measures 21 inches(53cm) or you have used just under half the weight of your ball of yarn (when my blanket measured 21 inches, my yarn ball weighed about 77g(2.7 oz) on my kitchen scales). You will then start section two using the remaining half of your ball of yarn.
  • The ch1 made at the beginning of each row does not count as the first stitch of the row / round.
