STYLISH CROCHET BABY HAT

This crochet bobble baby beanie is not only warm and practical but is right on trend too – it’s a look that everyone is sure to love!

It’s so soft and squishy, and has the most amazing texture! The raised bobbles will offer baby a great sensory experience too.

And if you like, up the cuteness level and add a yarn pom pom to the top of your hat!

Size 0-3 months in blue and size newborn in the white colour.

VARIOUS SIZES

Baby hats are popular with crocheters as they’re quick projects to make and are typically made using only 1 ball (or less) of yarn.

This pattern comes in 6 sizes: preemie, newborn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months and 1-2 years.

I loved the bobble stitch so much that I decided to design an entire baby set around it: there’s a matching cardigan, booties, mittens and blanket.

If there’s a new arrival in the family or upcoming baby shower, you might like to gift your crochet bobble baby beanie along with some other items from the set.

YARN USED

For this crochet bobble baby beanie, I used Paintbox Yarns Baby DK for sizes preemie, newborn, 0-3 months and 3-6 months.

This yarn is a weight 3 / DK / 8 ply yarn and is a lovely blend of acrylic and nylon, making it an incredibly soft option for baby.

For sizes 6-12 months and age 1-2 years I used Stylecraft Special Aran, which is a weight 4 / aran / 10 ply yarn and comes in the most gorgeous selection of colours!

You can, of course, substitute these yarns with another brand – just make sure that you do a quick gauge / tension test beforehand (details below).

CROCHET BOBBLE BABY BEANIE: A FREE PATTERN

This article for a crochet bobble baby beanie may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my links, at no extra cost to you. Please read full disclosure for more information.

Please carefully read all the information below.

LEVEL

Project Level is Easy

“Projects may include simple stitch patterns, color work, and/or shaping”.

Source: Craft Yarn Council of America’s www.YarnStandards.com

PATTERN NOTES
  • US crochet terminology used throughout.
  • There are three sets of instructions: 1. Preemie & newborn 2. 0-3 & 6-12 months 3. 3-6 months & 1-2 years.
  • Use the weight of yarn and hook size according to the size of hat that you wish to make (details below in ‘supplies’).
  • The beanie is worked in rounds from the brim up.
  • For beginners, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch made at the beginning of each round. This will ensure that you slip stitch into the correct stitch when joining at the end of the round.
  • When working the bobble stitch pattern, you will be instructed to TURN your work and work into the 1st stitch of the round. It can be tricky to know which stitch to work into first; the easiest way to remember this is to work your first stitch into the 3rd chain from the hook.
SUPPLIES
  • YARN FOR PREEMIE / NEWBORN / 0-3 MONTHS / 3-6 MONTHS

Category #3 / light worsted / DK / 8 ply yarn. I used 1 ball of Paintbox Yarns Baby DK, 183 yds / 1.8 oz (167m / 50g).

  • YARN FOR 6-12 MONTHS / 1-2 YEARS

Category #4 / worsted / aran / 10 ply yarn. I used 1 ball of Stylecraft Special Aran, 214 yds / 3.5 oz (196m / 100g).

  • CROCHET HOOKS:

Preemie – Both an E (3.5mm) & G (4mm) hook

Newborn / 0-3 months / 3-6 months – Both a G (4mm) & Size 7 (4.5mm) hook

6-12 months / 1-2 years – Both an H (5mm) & I (5.5mm) hook

  • Yarn needle (the bent tip makes sewing much easier)
  • Scissors (super sharp… and pretty)
  • Stitch marker (these interlocking ones will not fall out!)
  • Pom pom maker (easy to use for round, fluffy ones)
GAUGE / TENSION

In order to achieve the correct size and fit, it is important to test your gauge with a sample square before you begin.

If your tension is tight (too many stitches to ″), try using a larger hook.

if your tension is loose (fewer stitches to ″), use a smaller hook.

Preemie (E / 3.5mm hook):

14 stitches & 8 rows = 3″ (7.5cm) in double crochet

Newborn / 0-3 months / 3-6 months (G / 4mm hook):
26 stitches & 15 rows = 6″ (15cm) in double crochet

6-12 months / 1-2 years (H / 5mm hook):
20 stitches & 12 rows = 6” (15cm) in double crochet

FINISHED SIZE

Preemie: width – 5.25″; length 4″

Newborn: width – 5.75″; length 4.5″

0-3 months: width – 6.25″; length 5″

3-6 months: width – 6.75″; length 5.5″

6-12 months: width – 8″; length 6.25″
