STRIPED CROCHET BABY HAT: A FREE PATTERN

PATTERN NOTES
  • US crochet terminology used throughout.
  • There are three sets of instructions: 1. Newborn & 2-3 years 2. 0-3 months & 6-12 months & 3-5 years 3. 3-6 months & 1-2 years.
  • For sizes newborn, 0-3 months and 3-6 months you will use a #3 / DK / 8 ply yarn and a G (4mm) hook (details below in ‘materials’).
  • For ages 6-12 months and 1-2 years you will use a #4 / aran / 10 ply yarn and an H (5mm) hook (details below in ‘materials’).
  • For ages 2-3 years & 3-5 years, you will use a #5 / chunky / 12 ply yarn and a J (6mm) hook (details below in ‘materials’).
  • The hat is worked in rounds, starting from the crown down to the brim.
  • The chain 1 or 2 made at the beginning of each round does not count as your first stitch.
  • At the end of the round, please make sure that you slip stitch into the top of the first stitch to join the round.
  • Take care not to include the beginning chain 1 or 2 when counting your stitches at the end of each round.
  • For beginners, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker into the top of the first stitch of the round.
  • The video tutorial covers size 0-3 months, 6-12 months & 3-5 years only. However you can use it as a guide when making the other sizes.
SUPPLIES
  • 0-3 MONTHS:

YARN: Any category #3 / light worsted / DK / 8 ply yarn.

YARN FOR HAT (MAIN COLOUR):

Stylecraft Special DK, 323yds / 3.5oz (295m / 100g). For this size you’ll need 1 ball.

YARN FOR HAT (CONTRASTING COLOURED STRIPES):

Stylecraft Special DK, 323yds / 3.5oz (295m / 100g). You’ll need just a scrap amount of yarn for this size.

CROCHET HOOKS:

HAT: G (4MM) (OPTIONAL: 3.5MM for ribbed brim)

  • 6-12 MONTHS

YARN: Any category #4 / worsted / aran / 10 ply yarn.

YARN FOR HAT (MAIN COLOUR):

Stylecraft Special Aran, 214 yds / 3.5 oz (196m / 100g. For this size you’ll need 1 ball

YARN FOR HAT (CONTRASTING COLOURED STRIPES):

Stylecraft Special Aran, 214 yds / 3.5 oz (196m / 100g). You’ll need just a scrap amount of yarn for each size.

CROCHET HOOKS:

HAT: H (5mm) (OPTIONAL G (4.5mm) for ribbed brim)

  • 3-5 YEARS

YARN: Any category #5 / bulky / chunky / 12 ply yarn.

YARN FOR HAT (MAIN COLOUR):

Stylecraft Special Chunky, 157 yds / 3.5 oz (144m / 100g). For this size you’ll need 1 ball

YARN FOR HAT (CONTRASTING COLOURED STRIPES):

Stylecraft Special Chunky, 157 yds / 3.5 oz (144m / 100g). You’ll need just a scrap amount of yarn for each size.

CROCHET HOOKS:

HAT: J (6mm) (OPTIONAL I (5.5MM) for ribbed brim)

  • FOR ALL SIZES
GAUGE / TENSION

For each size, check your gauge / tension as follows:

0–3 months: Work the first 5 rounds of the pattern below. After round 5 the diameter of the crown should measure 4” (10 cm) approximately.

6-12 months: Work the first 5 rounds of the pattern below. After round 5 the diameter of the crown should measure 5” (13 cm) approximately.

3-5 years: Work the first 5 rounds of the pattern below. After round 5 the diameter of the crown should measure 6.5” (16 cm) approximately.

FINISHED SIZE

0-3 months: width – 6.5″ ; height – 5″

6-12 months: width – 7.5″ ; height – 6″

3-5 years: width – 9″ ; height – 7.5″

STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS (US CROCHET TERMS)

BPdc – back post double crochet: Yarn over (yo), insert hook from back to front to back around the post of the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, 3 loops remaining on hook. Yo, pull up a loop and pull through 2 loops on hook, 2 loops remaining on hook. Yo, pull up a loop and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook. 1 BPdc completed.

CC – contrasting colour

dc – double crochet: Yarn over (yo), insert hook into stitch, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook). Yo, pull through remaining 2 loops. 1 double crochet completed.

fasten off – To fasten off securely, work one chain, then cut the yarn leaving a 5 – 6” tail. Pull the tail through the loop that is on your hook. Tighten gently.

FPdc – front post double crochet: Yarn over (yo), insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, 3 loops remaining on hook. Yo, pull up a loop and pull through 2 loops on hook, 2 loops remaining on hook. Yo, pull up a loop and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook. 1 FPdc completed.

hdc – half double crochet: Yarn over (yo), insert hook into stitch, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yo, pull through all 3 loops. 1 half double crochet completed.

MC – main colour

sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over (yo), pull up a loop (2 loops on hook). Yo, pull through both loops on hook. 1 single crochet completed.

sl st – slip stitch: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over (yo), pull up a loop, you will have 2 loops on your hook. Pull the first loop through the second loop. 1 slip stitch completed.

( ) – Sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch or space.

* to * – Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed.

[ ] – The total number of stitches at the end of a row.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
CROWN

With MC:

Make a magic circle or ch4 and then sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.

Round 1. Ch2 (does not count as your 1st st here and throughout), 12dc into the centre of ring, sl st to 1st dc to join [12 sts].

Round 2. Ch2, 2dc in same st (at base of ch2), 2dc in next 11 sts, sl st to top of 1st dc to join [24 sts].

Round 3. Ch2, 1dc in same st (at base of ch2), 2dc in next st, *1dc in next st, 2dc in next st*, repeat from * to * for a total of 11 times, sl st to 1st dc to join [36 sts].

Round 4. Ch2, 1dc in same st (at base of ch2), 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, *1dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st*, repeat from * to * for a total of 11 times, sl st to 1st dc to join [48 sts].

Round 5. Ch2, 1dc in same st (at base of ch2), 1dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, *1dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st*, repeat from * to * for a total of 11 times, sl st to 1st dc to join, DO NOT TURN [60 sts].

For size 0-3 months: The diameter of the crown should measure 4” approximately.

For size 6-12 months: The diameter of the crown should measure 5” approximately.

For size 3-5 years: The diameter of the crown should measure 6.5” approximately.

MAIN BODY OF HAT

Rounds 6 – 8. Ch2, 1dc in same st (at base of ch2), 1dc in next 59 sts, sl st to 1st dc to join, DO NOT TURN [60 sts].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Change to CC:

Attach yarn to first stitch of the round.

Round 9. Ch1 (does not count as your 1st st), 1hdc in same st (at base of ch1), 1hdc in next 59 sts, sl st to 1st hdc to join, DO NOT TURN [60 sts].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Change to MC:

Attach yarn to first stitch of the round.

Round 10. Ch2, 1dc in same st (at base of ch2), 1dc in next 59 sts, sl st to 1st dc to join, DO NOT TURN [60 sts].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Change to CC:

Attach yarn to first stitch of the round.

Round 11. Ch1 (does not count as your 1st st), 1hdc in same st (at base of ch1), 1hdc in next 59 sts, sl st to 1st hdc to join, DO NOT TURN [60 sts].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Change to MC:

Attach yarn to first stitch of the round.

Round 12. Ch2, 1dc in same st (at base of ch2), 1dc in next 59 sts, sl st to 1st dc to join, DO NOT TURN [60 sts].

BRIM

NOTE: Size down hook (see ‘Materials’ section above) or keep tight tension.

Rounds 13 – 15: Ch2, *1FPdc in next st, 1BPdc in next st*, repeat from * to * until end of round, sl st to 1st FPdc to join, DO NOT TURN [30 FPdc, 30 BPdc].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
