YARN USED

These crochet baby mittens are made using one of the softest yarns I’ve ever worked with!

The yarn that I opted for is James C. Brett Flutterby Chunky, a 100% super soft polyester.

It’s a lovely, cosy chenille yarn and is a great choice for providing warmth to small baby hands.

The range of colours on offer is gorgeous too – so many pretty shades to choose from.

Make the mittens along with the matching beanie and booties.

CUTE BABY SET

Worked in the round, these crochet baby mittens can be made in a jiffy and are a great stash buster too (I used less than 1 ounce for each pair).

They’re also part of a set consisting of a cute hoodie, adorable baby booties, a sweet bear beanie and a gorgeous snuggly baby blanket.

If you’re looking for a gift for an upcoming baby shower or new arrival, this set is sure to delight the new parent(s).

FAST CROCHET BABY MITTENS: A FREE PATTERN

This post for fast crochet baby mittens may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my links, at no extra cost to you. Please read full disclosure for more information.

Please carefully read all the information below.

LEVEL

Easy. For details of project levels, please see the Craft Yarn Council.

SUPPLIES
  • Yarn: Category #5 / chunky / bulky / 12 ply yarn. I used approximately 0.5 ounce (13g) from 1 ball of James C. Brett Flutterby Chunky ,191 yds / 3.5 oz (175m / 100g). Colours featured
in the photos: Blue (3); pink (2); lilac (10); beige (28); green 11); yellow (9).
  • Crochet Hook: J (6mm) (easy on your hand, plus your yarn will glide off these hooks!)
  • Scissors (super sharp… and pretty).
  • Yarn needle (the bent tip makes sewing and weaving in ends much easier)
PATTERN NOTES
  • US crochet terminology used throughout.
  • Instructions are for size newborn. Changes for size 0-3 months and 3-6 months are given inside round () brackets.
  • When only one instruction is given in black, it applies to all sizes.
  • The mittens are made in rounds.
  • For best results, use the recommended yarn. You can use any other #5 / bulky / chunky / 12 ply yarn for this project, providing you meet the gauge as detailed below.
  • From row 2 onwards, you’ll work your half double crochets in the spaces in between each stitch (as opposed to crocheting through the top of each stitch).
  • The ch1 at the beginning of each round / row does not count as the first stitch of the next round/ row. Therefore, you should make the first half double crochet of the round / row in the first space, at the base of the ch1.
  • A video tutorial is provided with this pattern (newborn size only – see above).
GAUGE / TENSION

To check your gauge / tension, work the first 2 rounds of the pattern below.

After working these rounds, the diameter of your baby mitten should measure as follows:

Newborn: 1.75” (4.25cm) approx.
0–3 months: 2″ (5cm)
3–6 months: 2.25″ (5.75cm)

FINISHED SIZE

Newborn: Length – 3.5” (9cm)
0 – 3 months: Length – 3.75″ (9.5cm)
3 – 6 months: Length – 4” (10cm)

STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS (US CROCHET TERMS)

ch(s) – chain(s)

hdc – half double crochet: Yarn over (yo), insert hook into next space, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops
on hook). Yo, pull through all 3 loops. 1 half double crochet completed.

fasten off – To fasten off securely, work one chain, then cut the yarn leaving a 5 – 6” tail. Pull the
tail through the loop that is on your hook. Tighten gently.

sl st – slip stitch: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over (yo), pull up a loop, you will have 2 loops on your hook. Pull the first loop through the second loop. 1 slip stitch completed.

st(s) – stitch(es)

( ) – Sets of stitches to be worked as many times as directed.

[ ] – The total number of stitches at the end of a row.

SPECIAL STITCHES

FPhdc- front post half double crochet: Yarn over (yo), insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook. Yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook. 1 FPhdc completed.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
MITTENS (MAKE 2)

Ch 4 and sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.

Round 1. Ch1 (does not count as your 1 st here and throughout), 6 (7–8) hdc into the centre of ring, sl st to space between ch1 and 1st hdc to join [6 (7–8) sts].

Starting from round 2, you’ll work your half double crochets in the spaces in between each stitch.

Round 2. Ch1, 2hdc in 1st sp (at base of ch1), 2hdc in next 5 (6–7) sps, sl st to space between ch1 and 1st hdc to join [12 (14–16) sts].

Round 3. Ch1, 1hdc in 1st sp, 1hdc in next 11 (13–15) sps, sl st to space between ch1 and 1st hdc to join [12 (14–16) sts].

Rounds 4 – 6. Repeat round 3.

Size 3-6 months only:

Round 7. Repeat round 3.

All three sizes:

Next Round. Ch1, (FPhdc in next st, BPhdc in next st) 6 (7–8) times, sl st to space between ch1 and 1st FPhdc to join [12 (14–16) sts].

Repeat last round once (twice–twice) more.

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

The main body of your mitten is now finished and you should have 8 (9–10) rounds in total.

TIES (MAKE 2)

Ch 33 (37–41)

Cut yarn and weave each tail end in (I weaved the ends in and out of the back loops to hide them).

Weave the tie in and out through the spaces in between each stitch in round 7 (7–8). You can see how I did this in the video tutorial above.

And that’s your adorable little mittens all finished!
