Updated Pattern with Multiple Sizes

This super chunky crochet baby blanket pattern has recently been updated to include five different sizes, making it easy to create the perfect blanket for different stages and uses.

The pattern now includes:

  • Car Seat
  • Cradle
  • Stroller
  • Toddler / Lapghan
  • Crib / Throw

These size options make the pattern incredibly versatile. You can crochet a small, portable blanket for car rides or stroller outings, or create a larger cozy throw that grows with your child.

Great for Older Kids and Adults Too

While the Snuggle Cloud Blanket is designed with babies and children in mind, the larger sizes are wonderfully versatile. The Toddler / Lapghan size makes a perfect cozy blanket for older kids to snuggle under while reading, watching a movie, or relaxing on the sofa. It’s also a great lap blanket for adults, adding a soft layer of warmth without feeling too heavy.

The Crib / Throw size is even more flexible and works beautifully as a full throw blanket for adults. It’s perfect for draping over a sofa, adding a cozy touch to a bedroom, or curling up under on chilly evenings. Thanks to the super chunky chenille yarn, these larger sizes feel incredibly plush and luxurious—making them just as enjoyable for grown-ups as they are for little ones.

Yarn Used

For this design, I used James C. Brett Flutterby Huggable, a beautifully soft chenille yarn that gives the blanket its signature plush, cloud-like texture. This super chunky yarn is velvety soft and perfect for baby projects because it feels gentle against delicate skin.

It also works up quickly, allowing you to create a thick, cozy blanket in much less time than lighter weight yarns.

This yarn is made from 100% super soft polyester. I love the fact that it’s really easy to work with and has great stitch definition – if you’re a beginner you’ll especially appreciate this.

Yarn Substitutes

If you can’t find James C. Brett Flutterby Huggable, you can easily substitute other super chunky (weight 6 / 14 ply) chenille yarns with a similar plush texture.

Good alternatives include:

Premier Yarns Parfait XL

Hobbii Honey Bunny Big

King Cole Super Yummy

When substituting yarn, be sure to check your gauge and adjust your hook size if necessary to ensure the finished blanket turns out the correct size.

Pattern Notes

  • Quick tip: read these notes first… it’ll make everything easier!
  • US standard crochet terms are used throughout.
  • Numbers given are for smallest size, with numbers for larger sizes in ( ) brackets . E.g. carseat (cradle: stroller: toddler: crib).
  • Circle the size you wish to make beforehand (both stitch and row counts). You can download and print the PDF pattern here
  • From row 2 onwards, you’ll work your half double crochets in the spaces in between each stitch (as opposed to crocheting through the top of each stitch).
  • The ch1 turning chain does not count as the first stitch of the next row. Therefore, you should make the first half double crochet of the row in the first space (at the base of the ch1).
  • The blanket is completely reversible.
  • A video tutorial is provided here I’m making the cradle size in the video, but you can still follow along when making any of the other sizes.

Instructions

Chain 33 (29: 41: 49: 61)

Row 1. 1hdc in 2nd ch from hook, 1hdc in next 31 (27: 39: 47: 59) ch until end of row, TURN [32 (28: 40: 48: 60) hdc].

Row 2. Ch1, 1hdc in 1st sp (at base of ch1), 1hdc in next 31 (27: 39: 47: 59) sps, TURN [32 (28: 40: 48: 60) hdc].

Repeat row 2 until you have a total of 24 (31: 36: 45: 60) rows.

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

IMPORTANT: Due to the nature of chenille yarn, before weaving in ends, tie 2 to 3 knots in all yarn ends (be careful not to tie them too tightly or the yarn may snap!). This will prevent all your hard work from un-ravelling.

And that’s your Snuggle Cloud Blanket all finished! I loved sharing this pattern with you, and I hope it brings you as much joy to make as it did for me. If you’d like a keepsake version to crochet from your favourite chair, you can purchase and download the pretty, ad-free PDF here
