THE BOBBLE STITCH: AMAZING TEXTURE

This charming and visually appealing bobble crochet baby cardigan is perfect for keeping your little one warm and cozy!

The main body and sleeves of your cardigan is where you’ll showcase the beautiful bobble stitch.

It’s a really fun and engaging pattern to work, and adds so much dimension. With its raised, bumpy effect, it’s an excellent choice for baby items. It’s certainly one design that little hands will love to explore!

UNIQUE BABY SHOWER GIFT

You can see from the images that this little bobble crochet baby cardigan forms part of a set.

I originally just started off with the baby blanket however I loved the bobble stitch so much that I decided to design the cardigan and a matching hat, booties and mittens.

I think that they would be perfect for new arrivals, baby showers, birthdays and any other type of special event. These items are certainly something you could make and give all year around!

YARN USED

This bobble crochet baby cardigan pattern comes in 6 sizes.

To complete the cardigan in sizes preemie, newborn, 0-3 months and 3-6 months, you’ll need a #3 / light worsted / DK / 8 ply yarn.

I used Paintbox Yarns Baby DK, which is a lovely blend of acrylic and nylon and is so soft – perfect for younger babies (alternative yarn suggestions are in the “Materials” section below).

If you plan on making sizes 6-12 months or 1-2 years, you’ll make your cardigan using a #4 / worsted / aran / 10 ply yarn.

I opted to use Stylecraft Special Aran, which provides great stitch definition, is lovely to work with and comes in a huge array of colours (alternative yarn suggestions are in the “Materials” section below).

Pattern Notes

  • US crochet terminology used throughout.
  • There are three sets of instructions: 1. Preemie & newborn 2. 0-3 & 6-12 months 3. 3-6 months & 1-2 years.
  • Use the weight of yarn and hook size according to the size of cardigan that you wish to make (details below in ‘supplies’).
  • The cardigan is worked in one piece from neck edge down.
  • The ch1 and ch2 turning chains do not count as the first stitch of the next row. Therefore, you should make the first stitch of the row in the same stitch (at the base of the ch1 or ch2). At the end of rows, do not crochet into the top of the ch1 or ch2.
  • When counting the total number of stitches at the end of each round, please be careful not to include the ch1 or ch2 in the final stitch count.
  • For beginners, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch made at the beginning of each row / round.
  • Working the sleeves: from round 2 onwards you will be instructed to work into the 1st stitch of the round. It can be tricky to know which stitch to work into first; the easiest way to remember this is to work your first stitch into the 3rd chain from the hook.

GAUGE / TENSION

In order to achieve the correct size and fit, it is important to test your gauge with a sample square before you begin.

If your tension is tight (too many stitches to ″), try using a larger hook.

if your tension is loose (fewer stitches to ″), use a smaller hook.

Preemie (E / 3.5mm hook):

14 stitches & 8 rows = 3″ (7.5cm) in double crochet

Newborn / 0-3 months / 3-6 months (G / 4mm hook):
26 stitches & 15 rows = 6″ (15cm) in double crochet

6-12 months / 1-2 years (H / 5mm hook):
20 stitches & 12 rows = 6” (15cm) in double crochet

  3. Janet Kay says:

    Hi there,

A little confused. Did you use a size 7 crochet hook or size H 5.0 for the 1-2 years bobble cardigan ?

    1. Hi Janet,

You’ll start off with the H / 5mm hook for age 1-2 years.

You’ll then change to an I / 5.5mm hook as indicated throughout the pattern.

Thanks for your interest in this little cardie – I hope you enjoy working it up 💝

  4. This is a beautiful set! How do I find these patterns for all items. I don’t see a place to subscribe to your site?
