MODERN DESIGN

This bobble crochet baby cardigan pattern is a modern, top-down design. This means that you’ll begin working from the neck edge downwards.

One of the best features of this design is that there’s no seaming involved (yay!).

The main body and sleeves of your cardigan is where you’ll work the cute bobble stitch pattern.

It’s a fun pattern to work and it creates the most wonderful texture – babies will appreciate the softness and squishiness of their new cardie!

UNIQUE BABY SHOWER GIFT

You can see from the image below that this little bobble crochet baby cardigan forms part of a set.

I originally just started off with the baby blanket however I loved the bobble stitch so much that I decided to design the cardigan and a matching hat, booties and mittens.

I think that they would be perfect for new arrivals, baby showers, birthdays and any other type of special event. These items are certainly something you could make and give all year around!

YARN USED

This bobble crochet baby cardigan pattern comes in 6 sizes.

To complete the cardigan in sizes preemie, newborn, 0-3 months and 3-6 months, you’ll need a #3 / light worsted / DK / 8 ply yarn.

I used Paintbox Yarns Baby DK, which is a lovely blend of acrylic and nylon and is so soft – perfect for younger babies.

If you plan on making sizes 6-12 months or 1-2 years, you’ll make your cardigan using a #4 / worsted / aran / 10 ply yarn.

I opted to use Stylecraft Special Aran, which provides great stitch definition, is lovely to work with and comes in a huge array of colours.

PATTERN NOTES
  • US crochet terminology used throughout.
  • There are three sets of instructions: 1. Preemie & newborn 2. 0-3 & 6-12 months 3. 3-6 months & 1-2 years.
  • Use the weight of yarn and hook size according to the size of cardigan that you wish to make (details below in ‘supplies’).
  • The cardigan is worked in one piece from neck edge down.
  • The ch1 and ch2 turning chains do not count as the first stitch of the next row. Therefore, you should make the first stitch of the row in the same stitch (at the base of the ch1 or ch2). At the end of rows, do not crochet into the top of the ch1 or ch2.
  • When counting the total number of stitches at the end of each round, please be careful not to include the ch1 or ch2 in the final stitch count.
  • For beginners, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch made at the beginning of each row / round.
  • Working the sleeves: from round 2 onwards you will be instructed to work into the 1st stitch of the round. It can be tricky to know which stitch to work into first; the easiest way to remember this is to work your first stitch into the 3rd chain from the hook.
MATERIALS
  • YARN FOR PREEMIE / NEWBORN / 0-3 MONTHS / 3-6 MONTHS

Category #3 / light worsted / DK / 8 ply yarn. I used Paintbox Yarns Baby DK, 183 yds / 1.8 oz (167m / 50g):

Preemie – 2 balls

Newborn – 2 balls

0-3 months – 3 balls

3-6 months – 3 balls

  • YARN FOR 6-12 MONTHS / 1-2 YEARS

Category #4 / worsted / aran / 10 ply yarn. I used Stylecraft Special Aran, 214 yds / 3.5 oz (196m / 100g):

6-12 months – 3 balls

1-2 years – 3 balls

  • CROCHET HOOKS:

Preemie – Both an E (3.5mm) & G (4mm) hook

Newborn / 0-3 months / 3-6 months – Both a G (4mm) & Size 7 (4.5mm) hook

6-12 months / 1-2 years – Both an H (5mm) & I (5.5mm) hooks

  • BUTTONS:

Preemie / Newborn / 0-3 months / 3-6 months – 5x 15mm buttons

6-12 months / 1-2 years – 5 x 20mm buttons

  • Yarn needle (the bent tip makes sewing much easier)
  • Scissors (super sharp… and pretty)
  • Stitch marker (these interlocking ones will not fall out!)
GAUGE / TENSION

In order to achieve the correct size and fit, it is important to test your gauge with a sample square before you begin.

If your tension is tight (too many stitches to ″), try using a larger hook.

if your tension is loose (fewer stitches to ″), use a smaller hook.

Preemie (E / 3.5mm hook):

14 stitches & 8 rows = 3″ (7.5cm) in double crochet

Newborn / 0-3 months / 3-6 months (G / 4mm hook):
26 stitches & 15 rows = 6″ (15cm) in double crochet

6-12 months / 1-2 years (H / 5mm hook):
20 stitches & 12 rows = 6” (15cm) in double crochet

FINISHED SIZE

The sizes given are based on the standard measurements from the Craft Yarn Council. The cardigan has been designed with some positive ease, which means that it will quite comfortably fit over clothing.

You’ve now divided your cardigan for the sleeves and have created two armholes.

NOTE: When working the next row, each ch at the ch4-sp at the underarm area counts as 1 stitch.

MAIN BODY OF CARDIGAN

Change to crochet hook:

3-6 months – Size 7 (4.5mm); 1-2 years – I (5.5mm)

Row 1. Ch1, 1sc in same st (at base of ch1), 1sc in next sc, *bo in next sc, 1sc in next 2 sc*, repeat from * to * across row, ending bo in last sc, TURN [27 bo sts].

Row 2. Ch1, *1sc in next bo, 1sc in next 2 sc*, repeat from * to * across to end of row, TURN [81 sc].

Rows 1-4 set pattern.

Repeat rows 1-4 FIVE times more (you should have 12 rows of bobble stitches).

EDGING ALONG BOTTOM OF CARDIGAN

BUTTON BAND

Round 1. Sc evenly down left front (I made 47 sc), TURN.

Attach yarn to centre of underarm.

NOTE: To work the sleeves, you’ll crochet into the 30 stitches that were skipped in row 11. You will then create 6 more stitches at the underarm area, giving you a total of 36 stitches to begin with.

Round 1: Ch1 (does not count as your 1st st here and throughout), 1sc in same st (at base of ch1), work 35 sc around armhole, sl st to 1st sc to join, TURN [36 sc].

Round 2. Ch1, 1sc in 1st sc (see pattern notes above), 1sc in next sc, *bo in next sc, 1sc in next 2 sc*, repeat from * to *, ending bo in last sc, sl st to 1st sc to join, TURN [12 bo sts].

Rounds 2-5 set pattern.

Repeat rounds 2-5 FIVE times more (you should have 12 rounds of bobble stitches).

When you’ve worked the last round of this repeat, DO NOT TURN your work.

CUFF OF SLEEVE

Change back to crochet hook:

3-6 months – G (4mm); 1-2 years – H (5mm)

Next Round. Ch1, (sc2tog) twice, 28 sc, (sc2tog) twice, sl st to 1st st to join, DO NOT TURN [32 sc].

Next Round. Ch1, (sc2tog) twice, 24 sc, (sc2tog) twice, sl st to 1st st to join, [28 sc].

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

    Hi there,

A little confused. Did you use a size 7 crochet hook or size H 5.0 for the 1-2 years bobble cardigan ?

    • Amanda says

      9 April 2022 at 6:27 pm

      Hi Janet,

You’ll start off with the H / 5mm hook for age 1-2 years.

You’ll then change to an I / 5.5mm hook as indicated throughout the pattern.

Thanks for your interest in this little cardie – I hope you enjoy working it up 💝
