QUICK & EASY PATTERN

This crochet baby beanie hat is a really simple design that is made up entirely from the double crochet stitch.

This makes it a perfect pattern for the fledgling and advanced crocheter, both of whom appreciate a quick and easy pattern that works up in a jiffy!

Regular yarn is used for the main body of the hat. And for the last three rounds, you’ll use a fluffy yarn for extra warmth (and style). In this case, I used Sirdar Snowflake Chunky, which is so soft and a real joy to work with.

For an extra cute touch, top your beanie off with a pom pom!

Please carefully read all the information below.

LEVEL

Project Level is Easy

“Projects may include simple stitch patterns, color work, and/or shaping”.

PATTERN NOTES
  • US crochet terminology used throughout.
  • There are five sizes: 1. Newborn 2. 0-3 months 3. 3-6 months 4. 6-12 months 5. 1-2 years.
  • For sizes newborn, 0-3 months and 3-6 months you will use a #3 / DK / 8 ply yarn (details below in ‘materials’).
  • For ages 6-12 months and 1-2 years you will use a #4 / aran / 10 ply yarn (details below in ‘materials’).
  • The beanie is worked in rounds, starting from the crown down to the brim.
  • The chain 2 made at the beginning of each round counts as your first stitch. At the end of the round, you will slip stitch into the top of the chain 2 to join the round.
MATERIALS
  • YARN FOR NEWBORN / 0-3 MONTHS / 3-6 MONTHS

YARN A. Category #3 / light worsted / DK / 8 ply yarn. I used less than 1 ball of Debbie Bliss Rialto DK, 115 yds / 1.8 oz (105m / 50g).

The Debbie Bliss Rialto DK is a gorgeous yarn – but fairly pricey – so other alternatives are Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, Paintbox Yarns Baby DK and Stylecraft Special DK.

YARN B (fluffy yarn for the brim of hat). Scrap amount of yarn from 1 ball of Sirdar Snowflake Chunky, 136 yds / 1.8 oz (124m / 50g).

  • YARN FOR 6-12 MONTHS / 1-2 YEARS

YARN A. Category #4 / worsted / aran / 10 ply yarn. I used less than 1.8 oz (50g) from 1 ball of Stylecraft Special Aran, 214 yds / 3.5 oz (196m / 100g).

YARN B. (fluffy yarn for the brim of hat). Scrap amount of yarn from 1 ball of Sirdar Snowflake Chunky, 136 yds / 1.8 oz (124m / 50g).

  • CROCHET HOOK: Newborn, 0–3 months and 3–6 months G (4mm) for the main body of hat & an E (3.5mm) hook for the brim of hat. For 6-12 months and 1-2 years    H (5mm) hook for the main body of hat & a size 7 (4.5mm) hook for the brim of hat.
  • Yarn needle (the bent tip makes sewing much easier)
  • Scissors (super sharp… and pretty)
  • (OPTIONAL): Clover pom pom maker
GAUGE / TENSION

For each size, check your gauge / tension as follows:

Newborn:  Work the first 4 rounds of the pattern below. After round 4 the diameter of the crown should measure 3.5” (9 cm) approximately.

0–3 months: Work the first 4 rounds of the pattern below. After round 4 the diameter of the crown should measure 4” (10 cm) approximately.

3–6 months: Work the first 5 rounds of the pattern below. After round 5 the diameter of the crown should measure 4.5” (11 cm) approximately.

6-12 months: Work the first 5 rounds of the pattern below. After round 5 the diameter of the crown should measure 5” (13 cm) approximately.

1-2 years: Work the first 5 rounds of the pattern below. After round 5 the diameter of the crown should measure 5.5” (14 cm) approximately.

FINISHED SIZE
